Childrenswear fashion photographer
Back to School season means one thing in my diary, Deichmann. As a childrenswear fashion photographer based in Manchester, I always shoot this campaign with the team at Refinery. This year we were back at The Big Shed studio here in the city.
A selection of looks, a mix of kids, and a brief that covered everything from footballs and basketballs to school lockers and stationery the size of a small car 😉 In fact we shot the campaign with colour and energy, using punchy backdrops in purple, green, blue and orange. Each one was built to work as its own standalone shot for the campaign rollout.
Fashion Photography with Kids — Keeping It Natural
The trick with childrenswear fashion photography is keeping it natural. You can set the lighting, the props, the backdrop, but the second a child stops having fun the shot stops working. So a lot of my job on days like this is less about the camera and more about getting genuine smiles and real moments. For example, the paper aeroplane throw, the basketball mid-air, the girl giggling behind that giant set square. None of that’s posed in the way people assume.
WHY THIS CAMPAIGN WORKS
It’s a different pace to working with adult models. You’ve got shorter attention spans, parents and chaperones to factor in. Also, there’s a real need to build trust fast so the kids relax in front of the camera. Get that right and the energy in the images speaks for itself.
